Sundays at Lime Rock Park are quiet days due to local ordinances, so it was a day of festivities, including a Sunday in the Park Concours, held along the 1.5-mile's track front straight and into the first turn. The weather was sunny, warm, with early hints of fall.

With the help of members Murray Smith (event organizer) and Skip Barber (track impresario), we shared a tent on the hill overlooking the paddock with Autodynamics, who was having a reunion next door. It worked out quite well, as some members attending the Autodynamics reunion were able to sneak over to the RRDC side to visit and/or have their photos taken.

That included Bill Alsup, Gaston Andrey, Gordon Kirby, Brett Lunger and Sam Posey. Event Grand Marshal (and RRDC member) Stirling Moss came to visit in the midst of his heavy appearance schedule that day, as well as 95-year-old John Fitch, who was having a wonderful time visiting with his RRDC friends and longtime racing competitors.

Stirling and Gaston

Sir Stirling Moss holds court while Lucie Cunningham McKinney and smiling guest Bob Newman lean in. Gaston Andrey (right foreground) chuckles along. The three dudes in the background are Bill Mitchell, Bob Hebert and Archie Urciuoli.

Special guests included Briggs Cunningham's daughter Lucie Cunningham McKinney and her son John McKinney, Connecticut State Senator. Newly-voted in members Bob Hebert and Joe Freeman were welcomed into the Club. Lucie enjoyed catching up with Stirling and his wife Susie.

Archie Urciuoli emceed the luncheon, talking about the success of the RRDC's SAFEisFAST initiative and how the RRDC has grown in its 60-year existence.

Archie in control

Archie has everyone's rapt attention... well, most everyone's awake.

Courtesy of member Tom Davey (who was in Europe shooting videos for, we were able to distribute copies of Mark Donohue's original hand-written notes from the RRDC Advanced Drivers Clinic held at Lime Rock Park in 1975! They were 23 pages long and were grabbed by all. Some members who were at the Clinic that year indicated that they already had these notes in their files. A treasure for those racing regularly at Lime Rock, no doubt.

Other members attending the luncheon included Judy Stropus, Bobby Brown, Lee Talbot, Oscar Koveleski (whose wife Elaine helped with the registration), Bill Mitchell, Bill Warner, Mike Rand, Larry Kessler, Bob Boig, Roy Walzer, George Alderman, Fred Stevenson (who planted the seed that we should have this gathering), Roger Mandeville and Peter Sachs.

The energy in the tent was electric among the 60-plus members and guests. Other members who were unable to make it to the luncheon but were either competing or judging at the event included Duncan Dayton, Roger Werner, Bob Sharp and Peter Giddings. – Judy Stropus
