A bicycle champion in his youth, Sato was late to motorized racing, starting karting in Japan at age 19. Two years later, he jumped from the All Japan F3 series to England where he competed in several junior series settling on British F3 in ’99 and winning the championship in ’01, plus the Macau GP and the Masters of Formula 3 races. The following season, Sato moved to F1 with Jordan and then BAR for three years before joining Super Aguri which folded in ’08. After several one-time drives to finish the ’08 season, he crossed the pond, eventually landing a CART drive with KV Racing in ’10. He drove for Rahal Letterman Lanigan in ’12 and will be with A. J. Foyt Enterprises in ’13.
