Began in motocross at age 8. Ran 24 Hours of Mexico in ’81 at age 16 and was Mexican Formula Vee champion in ’83 and •84. From ’87 through ’89 he ran Formula Fords on the cheap in England before returning to Mexico and winning the ’91 F3 title. He moved to Indy Lights and was ’92 Rookie of the Year. From ’93 through ’04, Fernandez registered 194 career starts in CART, IndyCar and ChampCar scoring 11 wins, 25 podiums and was championship runner-up ’00. Forming a prototype team in ’07, he was ALMS LMP2 champion ’09 in his Acura factory team car. Aston Martin factory driver, ’10-’12.
